Esophageal cancer occurs in your esophagus that links the mouth to your stomach. The most common types are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.
Esophageal Cancer Cause
There are various factors which could boost your risk of getting esophageal cancer. They include:
- Chronic heartburn or acid reflux
- Smoking
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Heavy alcohol consumption
- Achalasia (a rare disorder of muscles in the lower esophagus)
- Barrett's esophagus (a condition which at times develops in those with GERD)
Esophageal Cancer Symptoms & Signs
The majority of esophageal cancer signs are not observable till the cancer reaches an advanced stage. They include:
- Trouble swallowing
- Chronic chest pain
- Unexpected weight loss
- Persistent hoarseness or coughing
