Tonsil Cancer at a Glance


Tonsil cancer happens when cells in a tonsil develop abnormally. Located in the back of the mouth, the two oval-shaped pads are part of your body's germ-fighting immune system. Tonsil cancer could cause trouble swallowing and a feeling that something is stuck in your throat.

Tonsil cancer is a form of oropharyngeal or oral cancer, and there exist two kinds of cancer that impact the tonsils: lymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma. 


Tonsil Cancer Cause

Some of the main causes of tonsil cancer are previous HPV infection, smoking, chewing tobacco, and heavy alcohol consumption.


Tonsil Cancer Signs and Symptoms

The most common symptoms and signs of tonsil cancer may include:

  • Persistent sore throat
  • Trouble swallowing, talking or chewing
  • Bad breath
  • Intolerance to eating or drinking citrus foods 
  • Severe ear pain
  • Pain or lump in the neck
  • Hoarseness or a shift in your speaking voice
  • Tiredness
  • Inexplicable weight loss
